Why Is There No Earthquake Early Warning System For The West Coast? If the USGS can stream earthquakes onto their website automatic, then why is it taking so long for the West coast and other states getting an Earthquake Early Warning system. Japan has had this technology for over 4 years. In addition to that how long do you think it will be before there is an efficient system in place to save lives
im not talking about hours of warning that would be quite ignorant. Look up what an Earthquake Early warning is before you answer. An early warning detects p waves(the fastest wave ) that earthquakes trigger and utilize the info from that wave and can give a good estimate of strength and locations that will be affected by the more powerful yet slower s wave. The warning time depends on how far away from the epicenter you are. the warning can range from a few seconds to a minute. If you are in doubt look up either Chile or Japan’s EEW system on youtube. If you still don’t understand don’t bother answering

There are in fact some P-wave monitoring systems being developed in parts of the West coast but most funding goes into upgrading infrastructure…it’s thought that it’s better to shelter in place in quake-proof buildings or have roads and bridge, etc..built to withstand large quakes than to have warning systems which can give false warnings or not enough warning time. If the epicenter of a quake is very close, a P-wave warning system would only give a few seconds of lead time….not very good in metropolitan areas which might be close to a potential epicenter.

And some research is also being conducted on studying electrical emissions that precede quakes by a number of days or weeks which could potentially allow for better quake warning systems. Historically, many people also point out that some animals or pets seem to sense an impending earthquake and will evade an area or act strangely although it’s less reliable to figure out if your pet dog Muffy is detecting a quake or just saw a squirrel.

      “California Develops Earthquake Early-Warning System
      by AMY STANDEN
      October 17, 2009 ”

“Allen is a seismologist with the University of California, Berkeley. He’s spent the past decade working on a system that can warn people when a major earthquake is on its way. The system, which receives federal funding through the Interior Department, undergoes a final testing phase this fall, and researchers say it should be up and running by 2013. It’s based on a network of seismic monitoring stations — some 400 of them — hidden around the state.”
      ……………
“When Allen and other scientists talk about earthquake early warning, they aren’t talking about hours, or even minutes. They’re talking about tens of seconds — or fewer, depending on your proximity to the epicenter.

“Unfortunately, our faults run beneath our metropolitan regions,” Allen says. “If you’re right above the earthquake, even with the early-warning system, you probably won’t get a warning. But if you’re 10, 20 30 kilometers away, then you start to get some warning.
In the Loma Prieta quake two decades years ago, residents in Oakland — where most of the deaths were — could have had about 20 seconds of warning, had the system been in place. But in future quakes, the warning could be as few as five or 10 seconds.”

Stand Alone Earthquake Warning Systems have been operational, deployed, and validated over the past 10 years. Networked Earthquake Warning Systems build on this success and afford enhanced warning time and initiate mitigation services. Seismic Warning Systems, Inc. has been providing Earthquake Warning (EQW) Systems to our first responders and commercial end-users throughout California for the past 10 years. California’s first Regional Earthquake Warning initiative is the Coachella Valley Regional Earthquake Warning System project (CREWS). CREWS was initiated in 2009 following the 2008 Golden Guardian Exercise and ShakeOut campaign.”

Coachella 2013?????????? How much will coachella tickets cost next year and also how much does it cost to camp out on the site for a weekend? (im saving up in advance) how much did the whole experience cost in 2012? I live in OC cali so i will be able to drive up. thanks in advance!

    • Curator says:

They’re about $300 for a 3 day pass and they don’t make single day passes so whoever says they are, are lying. You wont find a ticket below $300 too. Camping is like another $60 but your in the venue basically and they also have before and after parties and stuff. Two years ago my brother saw skrillex, 12th planet, a track, le castle vania, and popparazzi just in the camping parties.

When Does The Coachella 2013 Lineup Come Out? I want to go but I don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on a ticket if I don’t know who’s playing…
Does anyone know?! Even a guess?!
