I’m 14 year 8 I know I’m still young but I’m in highschool and my teachers I BELEIVE are starting to think I’m a drop out, I’m a girl I’m organized with everything, I try my best and listen in class and take notes, I do all my homework but bam when it comes to test and exams I fail so bad like today I got my results for math (I thought I got a b or a) but then she told be and said I got the lowest in class 20/100
I feel like killing myself I go to a catholic private school and if I tell my parents they will crack it with me and probs send me to a boarding school lol haha but seriously lucky I got a c at least for English. I honestly feel like ****.

Is there a way of cheating getting straight a’s????
I don’t know what to do, I was gonna go for the harder exam so next year I get into the higher math because I want to do business when I’m older but now I’m screwed!! ;(( I’m actually crying I always try my best but idk wats wrong with me. Thanks

I wonder if the problem is not just test anxiety but poor study skills and trouble understanding the math, I’ll give you some anxiety advice, but I have a feeling you can use more.

Google “test anxiety” and you’ll find a number of websites. Read each one and see which ideas appear again and again,. Many recommend slow, deep breaths.

Panic is often at the start of the test. If the first math problem is too hard, find an easy one. Word problems of math tests are not so bad because the problem cannot hide too much information. If you play around with it till you find some new information, that is probably the answer,or a version of the answer, like inches per second instead of miles per hour.

About math, you might want to read Math Doesn’t Suck by Danica McKellar.

I have written answers to study skills questions and you can click on my name to read them.

Please Help Im Really Stressed Out? So it’s pretty late and I’ve been just bawling my eyes out at my mom because I’m so stressed at school and taking honors classes. I can’t do so much work and I find it to be quite overwhelming for me. Next year I’m not going to take so many honors classes like this year.

But this year I’ve been failing so much and getting D’s and C’s in tests and quizzes. I’m so stressed right now because I have a geometry quiz tomorrow in which I understand like 10% of. Then I also have a huge WWI test for history which is my least strongest subject and I hardly know anything.

I just can’t go through the rest of the year like this. I can’t take it anymore. I just want to stay home and not worry about everything every second of my waking life. I seriously can’t do anything right now. I feel like crying until I’m all dried out and nothing more than a pile of leaves just blowing away in the wind with nothing pressing me down and squeezing all the life juices out of me.

Please just help. Anything you can say to motivate me for once to be happy.

    (Freshman in high school)

    • Curator says:

I’ll start with some good news. The courses that students fear the most are the easiest ones. History is nothing but memorizing lots of facts, It takes time, yes, but it’s easy. Of course, you have to know how to take notes. The best book that explains taking lecture notes is How to Double Your Child’s Grades by Eugene Schwartz. One of the most important things in memorizing is outlining. Put your notes into an outline, and make it detailed, with sentences and short paragraphs. If you want to do it right, put your lecture notes and reading notes together into one outline. Finally, make that outline into a set of flash cards and practice till you know the outline completely. The flash card is the best memory tool because you don’t waste time on things you already know.

I have looked at many study manuals and the best are ones by teachers in college psychology or education departments, like Complete Idiot’s Guide to Study Skills. You can also get study skills from the Internet, and compare to see which things show up again and again, like Active Learning, You probably want some course supplements, like Cliffs Algebra, also Math Doesn’t Suck by Danica McKellar.

I can’t tell you exactly what to do about the stress. I’ll mention some stress methods and maybe it will help.

Lie down and breathe slowly and deeply. Gently fill your lungs, hold it for a second, then let it out twice as slowly. Imagine a peaceful place, like a warm sandy beach in early June or a mountaintop.

Light exercise, take it easy. If it’s too cold to go for a walk, look at the Tai Chi videos on You Tube and imitate the slow, graceful moves. Slowing the body tends to slow the mind

Were Can I Learn Deep Meaning Math Easily? I’ve read math doesn’t suck and the other books by Danica Mckellar, and I’ve read math is an English problem, and I’ve read many of the articles on betterexplained and lesswrong(though the last ones not a math site per say) where can I find equally good source of deep meaning easy learning?

  • Sweetypie :) says:

Do We Need To Be Good At Math To Be A Scientist? See….I love science. I aspire to become a physicist….! But when it comes to mental math, Im terribly scared….! I can do math on paper. As much as u ask me to. But if u even ask me a 15+54 i wont be able to answer quickly…
Do u think i can become a scientist? A good one?
Tell me how to build up my mental math skills too….!

    • Curator says:

DON’T BE SCARED!!!!! I love that you love science. I was a physicist and I think that it’s terrific that a young woman like you aspires to be one.

While math is likened to the language of physics (did you know that calculus came to Newton in his investigation of motion?), being able to do math mentally is not nearly as important as doing math “on paper” — or computer!

Don’t be intimidated by math; there are many resources to overcome that, including books by Danica McKellar (see source below), a former child TV star who went on to earn a PhD in math and is an advocate for women in math and science.

I applaud you for doing what you love and wish you good fortune in your endeavor!

  • I Don’t Get Algebra!!? Ok so I’m in algebra 2. I took algebra 1 in 8th grade and it was hard but I passed. Now I’m in 10th grade and I’m taking algebra 2 and can’t pass no matter what I do! I stay after to get help, I try to gat my sister to explain it to me but I just don’t understand it. And then when I do get it i end up forgetting or leaving out a few steps on the test! What can I do? Why is it so hard for me?

    • Curator says:

There is a woman named Danica McKellar who was an actress, but now is a math teacher and she has written math books targeted for kids, teenagers and adults. Here is a link where you can see a book she wrote about algebra “Hot X, Algebra Exposed!” Her books are more than math books. She writes a story along with the math that really helps you understand it better. You can buy this online, or you can get is an barnes and nobel or any other major book store. I bought “Math Doesn’t Suck” for my daughter because she used to have major meltdowns over her math homework. She actually will do math from her book for fun! This line of books was recommended to me by a college math professor.
