Was Diana Nyad’s Successful Swim From Cuba To Florida Truly Non-stop? In no way am I seeking to diminish her incredible accomplishment, I am just curious to know whether she was swimming and treading water the entire time. In other words, did she ever climb on to the boat or grab on to the boat at any time during her swim? And I am sure drinking water was somehow passed to her and maybe food as well. Does anyone know about these details?

Losing Weight By Swimming? I need to lose about 20 pounds, and just by doing an overhaul on my food intake, I have already lost 8 pounds. Problem is, that’s about all I can lose just by cutting calories. I am in college full time, and I can’t afford a gym, and I don’t have a sitter so I can use the apartment gym. I do take my daughter swimming, and I am actually swimming very vigorously. Would this be enough to help me lose weight as far as exercise goes? Or will it just build muscle under te fat?

    • Curator says:

Swimming, if done rapidly for a long period or many laps, helps compact the body for a lean look. From swimming in a cold pool, a layer of fat is deposited as the body needs insulation. To lose weight, you’d need to diet. I don’t know about building muscle under fat. There might be visceral fat around the vital organs. The only way to get rid of that is with vigorous exercise. It does build muscles in the shoulders and chest, the shoulders’ depth. How I know is that I swam laps. I was quite thin, and the other people swimming were slim as well. You could ask a trainer or look at Michael Phelps or get the old book by Diana Nyad. She just tried to swim something, the English Channel or to Cuba, but didn’t make it. Use her for inspiration.

How To Train To Swim Across The Pacific Ocean? My lifelong dream has been to swim across the pacific ocean. i love to swim so this would be a great opportunity for me. any ideas for how to train? i would like to make the journey in about 2 weeks so please answer fast!

Diana Nyad just attempted to swim between Cuba and Florida for the 4th time. Her primary foes were weather, rough water and jellyfish stings. We are talking about relatively calm (3-6′ swells) waters covering a distance of about 112 miles. Despite having protection for her face and arms, the jellyfish stung her hands and lips repeatedly when she hit schools of them and had to retire from each attempt or risk anaphalactic shock — As a testament to Nyad’s constitution, one of the divers was “touched” by a tentacle from a brown box jellyfish while removing it from Nyad, then he promptly went into respiratory arrest and needed treatment on the spot.

To swim across the pacific has never been done at the wider distances — for obvious reasons it would be suicide. At its widest point the pacific is over 12000 miles and the wildlife as well as the conditions would be far more hostile.

However, there is the possibility of swimming between the U.S. and Asia traversing the Pacific at the Bearing Sea. 53-83 miles or the equivalent of a double to quadruple English Channel crossing depending on your start and finishing points. However you would need a full neoprene wetsuit to accomplish this or you would freeze to death/drown within seconds.

I would start by seeking psychiatric help. If that doesn’t deter you then I would start by training for a 1500M swim, then 3000, 5000, Train for and finish an Ironman (to see if you can physically endure activity for 13+ hours non-stop. When you get to that point think about 10,000m practices and an English Channel crossing or the Manhattan Island Marathon swim.

She’s tough but not tough enough. Someone younger is going to be the one to finally make that swim all the way across. I think it’s wonderful that she’s made so many tries.
