When To Put An Apostrophe On Possessive Words Ending With S? To my knowledge —and how I’ve always carried out my consistency in style— I’ve always placed an apostrophe after the ”s” on plural nouns only, never singular nouns & singular proper nouns: this is how I was taught.

So if I wanted to indicate that there was more than one student, I would then say.

”The students’ bags were all over the place”. As the word ”students” is a plural noun.

However, If I only wanted to refer to one student, I would then say.

”The student’s bag was on the floor”. As it is a singular noun, the apostrophe goes before the ”s”.

It doesn’t make a difference whether the noun is a proper noun, the apostrophe still goes before the ”s” in almost all cases.

So saying: ”Mr. Roberts’s car keys were left in the car”, is a grammatically correct statement, despite looking odd.

However, if it was: ” The Roberts’ car keys were left in the car”, this would refer to more than one member within the family, presumably all. Therefore, it’s grammatically correct as it’s a plural, proper noun.

Could someone please notify me if anything I have said is wrong, because I’m genuinely confused, after reading the following article:

    http://www.tmz.com/2013/01/27/chris-brown-frank-ocean-fight-westlake-studio/

”We’re told Chris went to shake Frank’s hand … and that’s when one of Frank’s people attacked Chris. Sources connected with Chris say one of Chris’ friends jumped in front and hit Frank’s friend.”

Chris is a singular noun, being made possessive, so shouldn’t it therefore be ”Chris’s friends jumped in front and hit Frank’s friend”?

I just want to clarify if this is indeed an error on their part, or just a preference in writing style, as I see it quite often. Thanks!
