We Cannot Pick Names For Our Child!? I am about ready to burst. We did not talk names a lot in the beginning. But in the last three months we have started looking. We can’t decide on a name. His taste and mine are different and we don’t want to use a middle name because neither of us has one. It was something we both liked. It’s just not something we want. We don’t know the baby’s gender yet.
We have ruled out all these names (between the two of us)

What Age Did Women Start Having Children In The 1910-1920 Time Period? At what age would women start having children in this time period, and how many would they be likely to have?
What age would they be likely to get married and roughly what age would their husband be (the same age or a lot older?)

Also, if possible, what baby names were common for boys/girls around this time period?

    • Curator says:

Do you mean the age at which a woman could conceive? If so, then it was pretty much the same as now: 13 years, say.
If you mean the age at which a woman could be married, then it varied across the states since the early days of legal restrictions. In the 19th century, marriage was common in some states from about the age of 13 years but this was frowned upon by social and religious leaders.

The period 1910-20 was relatively well-governed in respect to the “age of consent” as it is called.
Female reformers started a campaign in 1885 in the United States which made legislators raise the legal minimum age for marriage to at least 16 years. The campaign had the ultimate goal to raise age of consent to 18 years. The campaign was successful; almost all states raising the minimum age to 16–18 years by 1920.

By 1910, it was illegal almost everywhere in USA to be married before the age of 16 years, and it was 18 years in almost all the Eastern and Northern states.
