Interstellar Marriage? In today’s world where not all countries have accepted the idea of gay or even interracial marriage, what do you think the international consensus would be if complex, intelligent life came to Earth and somebody wanted to marry a member of that species? What would be YOUR opinion?

    – We are assuming the species holds similar social values such as monogamy.
    – We would have to speculate that this species is either pro inter-species marriage or indifferent to it.
    – Would it make a difference if this species were genetically compatible? (i.e. Offspring could be produced?)

Religious, secular, scientific – ANY views welcome 🙂

Physics Homework Help? I am a Christian, but my homework says: what is one piece of evidence that supports the Big Bang theory? I need the answer. Thanks

    • Curator says:

What does your “Christianity” have to do with the “Big Bang” theory? From what you say, to wit; “I am Christian, but my homework says: What is one piece of evidence that supports the Big Bang Theory?”; there seems to be the implication that being Christian and being a “Big Bang” theory advocate are mutually exclusive alternatives. But that is not true.

You may not think that Roman Catholics are Christians, but they actually are Christians, since they recite the Apostle’s Creed which mentions their belief in Jesus Christ and various biblical assertions about him. At any rate the point is that a Christian mathematician and cosmologist came up with the “Big Bang” theory. He was also a Jesuit priest [a Catholic priest] named George Lemaitre, besides being a mathematician and a cosmologist. He called the “Big Bang Theory” by the name of a “Primordial Atom Theory” — a very small “singularity” which exploded [made a “Big Bang”] and formed the universe we have today. Since a Christian came up with the original theory [and this time the Vatican did not put him under house arrest as they diid to Galileo who was also a believing Catholic] being “Christian” is hardly a justification for not believing or seriously considering the theory — given both that a Christian “thought it up” and the Bible tells you that there presumably was a BIG BANG OF LIGHT right after God allegedly said “Let there BE LIGHT” in the early part of Genesis.

As to the actual scientific evidence: The primary evidence supporting the theory is what some people call “The Expanding Universe” phenomenon. But what they actually mean is that:

All the galaxies that astronomers can see are moving away from our own galaxy at varying rates. Most significantly, the farther that those galaxies are away from our own galaxy, the faster they are moving away from it as determined by a so-called “red shift” in the basic elements (certainly hydrogen and helium and perhaps other basic elements) of the stars and interstellar gases and dust of those galaxies.

The “red shift” is analogous to the shift in sound one hears between a vehicle or train rapidly approaching ourselves and the shift in sound when it goes by us. That shift in sound from a higher frequency of sound [especially if a train or vehicle is sounding a “horn” or “siren” as it approaches] as the vehicle approaches us at a high speed to a lower frequency after it passes us and then moves away from us at the same high speed is analogous to a “red shift” in the spectrum of “glowing elements”.

When a vehicle moving at high speed goes by us, the frequency of sound shifts from a high frequency of sound (as it approaches us) to a lower frequency of sound (after it goes by us and is moving away). Think of the sound of a NASCAR vehicle as it approaches us on a track and then blows by us: NRRRRRR (high frequency of sound) — OOOMmmm (low frequency of sound and getting lower all the time). Analogously in the visible spectrum of wavelengths of light red is the lowest frequency (longer wavelength) of visible light and blue violet is the highest frequency (shortest wavelength) of visible light.

And there is only one possibly dubious (very slightly dubious or slightly doubtable) assumption in the Big Bang Theory, which is that all elements normally radiate light (upon being heated) or. alternatively, absorb light (when illumined) at standard and characteristic wavelengths.

What early observers noticed was that the wavelengths of light they could see in their “spectrographs” didn’t quite match those found by analysing the spectral emission and absorption patters of light coming from our own sun. However, if the wavelengths of the patterns [both emission of light patterns and absorption of light patterns] were “shifted” more toward the “blue end” of the light spectrum, then spectral absorption and emission patterns “lined up” with the patterns they saw in light from our own star.

The conclusion they reached was AS OBVIOUS to them as the change in “sound pitch” is to anyone who goes to NASCAR races or who pays attention to sound emission patterns while out in traffic. The light being emitted or absorbed at great distances from our own star had shifted in pitch (i.e. frequency) from what they saw around our own star to a lower pitch/frequency because (THEY REASONED) the light sources were moving away from us — which is called a “red shift”. The farther away that galaxies were away from us, the greater the “red shift” [in the spectral absorption or emission patterns of basic elements] or “drop in frequency” of standard and well known patterns/spectra of basic elements.

Lemaitre, the Christian Jesuit, found it reasonable to suppose that there was, once upon a time, a time when everything was really close together — a so-called “primordial atom” which had exploded. The red shift of the light of receding galaxies was one part of the scientific evidence.

Another big bit of scientific evidence, as another writer has mentioned, was the discovery of a single frequency of electromagnetic energy (equivalent to 3 degree Kelvin microwave radiation), discovered by Penzias and Wilson, coming at earth from all directions of space — no matter the time, date or season or in whatever direction receivers/radio-wave-antennae are aimed. Some people call it the “echo” of the original big bang event which has been “red shifted” to a minimum energy [just 3 degrees centigrade above Kelvin’s “absolute zero” energy].

But “echo” is an unfortunate term, since it implies that the energy is being “bounced off” of some objects. However “3 degree Kelvin” microwave radiation can be easily annihilated by the relatively vast energy of light emitted from a candle or even the infra red energy of your own body heat. The energy which Penzias and Wilson discovered is ubiquitous and is entirely independent (as well as easily interfered with by local sources) of any local sources of energy.

In sum, modern science, in terms of Biblical Theory [Let there be light!] and BIG BANG THEORY (there was this hugely tremendous explosion of energy) doesn’t do anything but support (rather than contradict) your Christian Bible with a really BIG BANG OF LIGHT [and every other frequency of electromagnetic energy], where your Bible only says “Let there be light.”

There is no “contradiction” in the 2 theories for any actual Christian and actual scientist to debate.

Contemporary Solo Song Help? I’ll be doing a solo for the upcoming recital season next year, and I need some help with songs. I’ve had a very rough time recently, and I’d like a song that would really make my parents cry. I’d love to be able to really use good articulation and make really artistic movements. Some songs that I’ve listened to and considered are:

-Sia: I’m In Here (this is the type of emotion I like)
-Zee Avi: Concrete Wall (this is the type of musicality I want to utilize)
-Olafur Arnolds (WONDERFUL song, but wishes for more emotion)

I was once considering Christina Perri’s “Human” because it’s the right emotion I want, and if I did, I was going to use BoyEpic’s cover and same concept. Any help is appreciated!

  • Mike says:

What Proof Is There, That The Universe Had A Beginning? Now i know of 2 so called proofs the CMB radiation, supposedly radiation from the fireball?, though could have many other explainations, like it’s the light stretched by the doppler effect from galaxies beyond the observable universe that are now microwaves, they offer proof of the universe expanding as they see galaxies with a red shift, yet in our observable bubble, we have a certain amount of mass but outside this bubble we have the infinite universe pulling these galaxies towards them, they have no idea other than the redshift as to the cause, they can’t measure a galaxies distance accurately then 10 years later show it’s travelled 1.5 light yrs, that obsured as is the theory of an expanding universe, so what other ‘Proofs’ are there, remember cosmology is a science of personal interpretation that depends on how close your research grant is up for renewal.as it can’t be proven, you rely on the fact that your peers agree with your hypothesis, which is not science.
    anyway tell me the proofs.

    • Curator says:

There is no proof. Cosmological redshifts are the result of light losing energy through it’s interaction with the intergalactic medium ( http://www.newtonphysics.on.ca/universe/ ). The galaxies are not generally flying away from each other at all. If the doppler effect was responsible for cosmological redshifts, as well as stretching out the wavelengths of light, it would also stretch out the light curves of quasars (their oscillation in luminance), but we find this is not the case: http://phys.org/news190027752.html

The so-called CMB is simply the thermal radiation of the interstellar medium, or more specifically, it’s surface-of-last-scattering which is the heliopause. In other words, it comes from the edge of our solar system and is not actually a background to the stars at all, which is why galaxies do not create shadows on it ( http://www.moondaily.com/reports/Big_Bang_Afterglow_Fails_An_Intergalactic_Shadow_Test_999.html ) and why it has identifiable polar distributions that are aligned with our solar system and it’s motion through the Milky Way:
      http://www-personal.umich.edu/~huterer/PRESS/CMB_Huterer.pdf (pdf)

Btw, the redshifting effect of the intergalactic medium is the reason that Olber’s paradox is defunct. Once light travels far enough to get redshifted down to the microwave region it starts to get thermally absorbed by this medium and re-emitted, hence all information about it’s original source is eventually lost (known as thermalisation).

What Do I Need To Create A Videogame? So, my friends and I really wanted to create a videogame, most likely for PC (and possibly even console). It’s called Sentinel, and it’s based around a struggle between 3 different groups in an interstellar, 4th world war. We want to make it a multiplayer game with dedicated servers, and Cryengine for graphics. It’s supposed to include a 30+ player fps multiplayer, 16 player survival, and a free roam campaign (like Mass Effect’s).

I really wanted to see this game take off, but there is on MAJOR problem in our way… none of us have any coding experience, or any experience with game design to begin with for that matter. But, we have the basic idea behind what Sentinel will have, and I don’t want for it to go to waste. We really want to begin work on this game, but we need to know where to start. So, I ask if anyone can help me on what to do.Thanks.
