Why Didn’t The Marines Use Churchill Tanks WWII? Since the Churchill was designed specifically for clearing bunkers, pillboxes, barbed wire, etc. Why didn’t the U.S. military buy some off the British for places like Okinawa and Iwo Jima? I don’t think the Japs had any weapon capable of taking out the Churchill, since they barely had anything to destroy the crappy Sherman. The Churchill Crocodile also was better than the Sherman crocodile since it had better range for the flamethrower and didn’t blow up if it got hit since it carried the fuel in a trailer behind the tank. It could also climb hills better than any allied or axis tank. I’m not British, I’m American but I think this would have really lowered the U.S. casualties.
I know it wasn’t the best tank, but anything was better than Sherman. We gave some Shermans to the British, so why not trade for some Churchills?

    • Curator says:

      1. The Churchill was not “designed specifically for clearing bunkers, pillboxes, barbed wire, etc.”
      2. The Churchill was a British tank. British production was so incapable of supplying the needs of their own army most British tankers after 1942 went to war in American built tanks. So just exactly where are these Churchill’s going to come from?
      3. The U.S. Marines by 1944 had standardized on the M4A2 with 75mm gun with which they were extremely pleased.

What Is Your Favourite Army ? Mine is the following in descending order – from WWII :

    1) Red Army – they fought the longest and bloodiest battle in history at the Eastern Front
    2) Imperial Japanese Army – For their self-sacrificing samurai spirits
    3) British Army – Constant battle in many areas as the longest member of the Allies
    4) Nazi Regime – Never say die attitude in the European theatre and of declaring the war itself
    5) US Marines – The Battle of the Bulge and the Pacific War (Iwo Jima, Okinawa etc.)
@ SIts Vacant – Yours too… just want to share and look at public opinion

      7 Elements,
another interesting question again. My “Favourite (aka favorite) Army” is by chance not an Army at all. My profile pic is of the Service I was proud to wear a uniform of and this would be the United States Marine Corps.

Thumbs up to Laredo above me.

As an honorary mention I will provide these additional services as some I enjoy reading historical information on and/or about:

      1. United States Army
      2. Royal Army and Royal Marines
      3. Royal Canadian and Australian Armies of the First and Seconcd World War.
      4. Polish Resistence during the Second World War (this too was an army based on necessity).
      5. The French Foreign Legion
      6. French Marines
      7. Gurkah’s

I hope this helps and all the best,

What Are Some Major Legacies Left By People? So I’m working on a video project for my American Lit class and I’m doing it about leaving a legacy. I want to put in video clips of people that have left big legacies in the beginning because i think it would be a good intro. So far i have part of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I have a dream” speech, Neil Armstrong landing on the moon, a clip from one of Hitler’s speeches, the raising of the Iwo Jima flag, and part of a 9/11 news report. Any other ideas?

    • Curator says:

The island of Iwo Jima stands between the American military force and the home islands of Japan. Therefore the Imperial Japanese Army is desperate to prevent it from falling into American hands and providing a launching point for an invasion of Japan. General Tadamichi Kuribayashi is given command of the forces on the island and sets out to prepare for the imminent attack. General Kuribayashi, however, does not favor the rigid traditional approach recommended by his subordinates, and resentment and resistance fester among his staff. In the lower echelons, a young soldier, Saigo, a poor baker in civilian life, strives with his friends to survive the harsh regime of the Japanese army itself, all the while knowing that a fierce battle looms. When the American invasion begins, both Kuribayashi and Saigo find strength, honor, courage, and horrors beyond imagination.
