Computer Won’t Come Off Of Standby Mode Please Help!? I have a Dell inspiron. I usually just shut the lid to make it go into standby then hit the space bar to have it wake up”. The past few times the screen won’t light up it stays dark and for me to get it back up I have to turn it off. Any tips or reasons as to why it could be doing this?
    thank you

      Hi Jenny,

This issue could be caused due to an update, a recent software change made by you or corrupted/ outdated drivers.

You may try updating the video drivers. You may download and install the latest version from the link below:

      http://dell.to/17nZFN0

On the link, enter the system Service Tag and click on ‘Continue’. Select the operating system and it will display a list of available downloads.

You may also try taking the system back to a time when it was working fine by performing a System Restore. See the link below for steps:

      http://dell.to/12Meu4A

Note: System Restore will not cause loss of data. However, any applications installed after the date to which the system is being restored would be uninstalled.

Also ensure that the keyboard is set to wake up the system. Check the following link to know how to do that:

      Hope this helps.

Dell Inspiron 1521 Any Good? I need a laptop with wireless to contact to my broadband and one that can run microsoft office basically so i can write my essays up. i cant afford a new one but ive seen this secondhand one online for 100 pounds..it says good condition..is this a fair price for the laptop ( they all look the same to me) and will it work for the purposes i need it for?

    • Curator says:

      Hi Jenny,

Almost all new laptops have built in Wireless card to connect to a wireless network. Also, Microsoft Office does not require a particularly powerful computer and would work with most systems that can run Windows. An Inspiron 1521 should be able to handle these with ease.

However, while buying an old laptop, make sure that it has the genuine Windows and software installed. Also ensure that the battery and the AC adapter are included and working fine. Look for a deal where the seller is giving any warranty or at least a return period in case of any issues.

A new system would cost you around 300 pounds. If surfing the Internet and typing in MS Word is all that you would be doing on the laptop, this system should fit the bill. Check the link below to know the specifications on Dell Inspiron 1521:

      ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_inspiron_laptop/inspiron-1521_Owner%27s%20Manual_en-us.pdf

      Hope this helps.

What Is Wrong With My PC’s Control Panel? When I clicked on “Devices and Printers” on the Control Panel, the screen was completely blank, and at the bottom it said there were 0 devices on the computer. That is nuts?
What could be wrong, and how could I fix it?
My computer is a Dell desktop, and I use Windows 7 Home Premium.

      Hey Jenny…
      I searched around a bit
You may have a registry entry that is either wrong or missing.
Some have said this happens from using registry cleaners instead of registry repair software , or installing older programs or other files with no available updates
This problem “for some” has also been traced back to a script in internet Explorer.

For that subject and a possible fix go here:
      http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/devices-and-printers-dialog-box-empty/353707a4-bcb0-4334-98bc-aab84747fecd

You can also try a chkdsk command. This will scan your hard drive in the registry and other Operating System files, as well as the Hard Drive sectors if you opt to..
If errors are found, it will try a repair, or if needed to, a replacement of files that the system automatically backs up. But because the system only backs up just so many registry files you may have the same ones in the backup file if this problem has been present for some time.

      But try it anyway .
      Click START
Then click “Computer”. Now right click the C drive, & from the drop down menu click properties.
In the new window, Choose the “Tools” tab, and in “Error Checking” click the “check now” tab.
It will not scan while running in Windows , but will schedule a scan on the next reboot.
Agree if you want it to check it.
On the next Reboot , depending on how big the drive is and how much data is on it, it may take a while to scan the system so be ready to wait a bit.

      That’s all I can do,
      Good Luck.

Why Do I Have A Network Ikon In My Task Bar? In the task bar of my desktop PC there is an ikon which, when clicked on, says “network, Internet access”.
If I click on it again I see a message saying my computer is connected to a network.
This puzzles me, because I didn’t think my computer was on a network. The setup I have is a desktop Dell PC, running on Windows Home Premium, plus an external hard disk drive. Is this a network, or should I alter things so it is not classed as a network?
This confuses me, and I would greatly appreciate some help on what I should do.

      Hi Jenny
My name is Harish and I work for the Social Media and Community Team at Dell. The Network icon would say connected for both, Internet connection as well as for a local network. You need to check the Access- For internet connection it would ideally say- Local & Internet.

Happy, Feel Good Book Suggestions? So I’ve read alot of books that have made me kinda sad recently and I want to read a more uplifting book that’ll put a smile on my face! Preferably fiction and can be YA or adult, I don’t mind.
I’m a 17 year old girl by the way! (if that helps?)

(it doesn’t matter that there’s a little sadness in it because that’s understandable, as long as there’s a happy ending and it makes me feel happier lol)
