Who’s Your Favourite Broadway Star? Laura Benanti, Kristin Chenoweth, Sutton Foster, Kerry Butler, Bernadette Peters, Patti LuPone, Bebe Neuwirth, Megan Hilty, Shoshana Bean, Mandy Patinkin, Aaron Lazaar, Joel Grey, Nathan Lane, Brian Stokes Mitchell, etc…

  • Into The Woods: Original Cast Or 2002 Revival? I’m kind of leaning towards both, because the OBC has Bernadette Peters, & the Revival has Laura Benanti, who is one of my favorite Bway actresses ever. But which one is best overall, without regard to any particular actor/actress?

    • Curator says:

Overall, I personally prefer the OBC. Mostly because I strongly prefer Bernadette Peters’ performance to Vanessa Williams’.

I also love Laura Benanti- She does sound lovely on the 2002 cast recording. Her “No One is Alone” is dreamy!

The two performances I really prefer on the revival recording are Gregg Edelman as the Baker and John McMartin as the Narrator/Mysterious Man. They just sound so wonderfully sincere.

I know you said you wanted an overall opinion without regard to the particular actors… but I can’t help myself!

I think it’s always good to own multiple cast recordings of the same show… It’s fascinating to hear different people’s interpretations of the same role. And in the case of Into the Woods, the 2002 cast recording has the song “Our Little World” which is not on the OBC recording!

Best On Broadway (of Off) In December – Recommendations Please? My husband and I are looking to go to a show (theater, musical, comedy, etc) in New York in December. I’d love to hear from people who have seen what’s playing now and get some recommendations. Thanks!!

    • Curator says:

December is a good time to go, because some of the best shows are closing in January! Some musical suggestions on Broadway:
      – Promises, Promises: a revival of this great comedy (with a bit of drama) starring Kristin Chenoweth and Sean Hayes (who are both excellent.) A fun musical of dance numbers and old fashioned songs. As of right now, closing early January.
      – Next to Normal: as shown by my avatar, one of my favorites. An emotional, moving story of a family trying to deal with death and craziness. Full of epic songs, with some bits of humor along the way. This is closing in January as well. But be warned–this has a lot of bad words, so if you are offended by that, I do not recommend it.
      – Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown: I have not personally seen this show, but I have heard that it is hilarious. It stars Broadway legends Patti LuPone, Sherie Rene Scott, and Laura Benanti, so worth seeing just to watch them perform! This is also closing in January.
      – In the Heights: won a Tony in 2008 for best musical. I love this show, but some think the different style of music (hip hop and rap, but also amazing harmonies and group numbers) is not suited for Broadway. I recommend it if you and your husband like more contemporary musicals. Once again, closing in January.
      – The Addams Family: I know it sounds cheesy, but I was pretty impressed with this show. It stars Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth, and they make it hilarious. The story may be a little meh, but it is very funny and has some good songs and dance numbers. Plus, Krysta Rodriguez (Wednesday) has an amazing voice.
      – Irving Berlin’s White Christmas: the ultimate Christmas spirit musical. Good if you just want a cheery, old fashioned type of show.

Then there are the classics, like Phantom of the Opera (obviously amazing), Chicago (good), Wicked (also fantastic, but will be around forever so no rush), Jersey Boys (Juke box musical, not one of my favorites), Mamma Mia (eh.. Not my favorite, but some do love it). Plus Elf, a holiday musical based on the movie, is playing, but it has gotten mediocre reviews. Off broadway, there is Avenue Q, which is a hilarious musical (though it is a ‘rated R’ type of thing, so be warned.)

This is probably more than you ever wanted to know, but that’s all I can think of right now. Have fun!

What Kind Of Gifts Are Appropriate For Actors In Plays? I have a guy friend in a play, Dracula, and I guess if it factors in, I do like him..I’m trying to find something to give him after the performance. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks 😀
Sorry, I’m new to Answers so I don’t know how to reply to you guys, but THANKS so Much!

    • Curator says:

I would solicit the Broadway Plays and Musicals for cast signed playbills (programs) both for cast gifts and for fundraising raffles/auctions. Never fails to impress the cast and friends because it’s something for them to shoot for if drama and theatre arts is their life.

We just completed a HS production of “Gypsy” and I was able to request a signed playbill from Boyd Gaines, Patti LuPone and Laura Benanti, the three 2008 Tony Award Winners for Broadway’s Gypsy and presented it to our director, which made her speechless and almost in tears for the gift.

Give it a try and hope his production is successful!
