Why All Of The Establishments Are Temporarily Closed Down? In observance of the Lenten season, unlike in the yuletide season, why all of the establishments, malls, offices, stores, restaurants, and also, the radio stations (all, but not everyone), are temporarily closed down in 3 days (from Maundy Thursday to Black Saturday), and it will be resume on Easter Sunday (Black Saturday for the malls, establishments, restaurants, and the selected radio stations)?

Why Are Statues……………………..? Covered in the Catholic Church and in others not. I know it’s lent and Easter is next weekend but why only in some churches do they cover the statues? It symbolises your concentration on Christ?

    • Curator says:

In the Catholic tradition, lent is a time when a lot of things are set aside, so that the liturgy becomes increasingly emptied and simplified. In effect, the liturgy suffers a symbolic ‘death’, reflecting the death of Christ.

Apart from covering the statues, lent is a time when the ‘Gloria’ prayer is not used. And on Maundy Thursday, the use of bells in the liturgy comes to an end, and the blessed sacrament is taken out of the tabernacle. On Good Friday, the tabernacle is empty, and mass is not celebrated. These things do not come back into use until the Easter Vigil, when the liturgy is ‘resurrected’, in a deliberate echoing of Christ’s resurrection.
