  • Can New Browns Coach Mike Pettine Safely Make Vacation Plans For Next January? I suppose if Mike goes 6-10 or worse his first year the Browns will send him packing, so he will have plenty of time and several million bucks in his pocket. Why not enjoy a nice vacation?

    • Curator says:

Regardless if he is fired or not, it would be a real shocker if anyone on the Brown’s had to go to work in January. It looks like week 17 will still be played in December, so Pettine should be safe to make plans.
They should put an orange sweater on Mora….Playoff? Playoffs?

Could The Bills Land These Players In The 1st 3 Rounds? 1st round: DE Dion Jordan/OLB Jarvis Jones
    2nd round: ILB Manti Te’o
    3rd round: WR Justin Hunter

We get the perfect player to play Mike Pettine’s hybrid defense in Dion Jordan/Jarvis Jones.
We get the perfect player to play ILB in 34 or 43 schemes and to stop the run. The Bills have been last against the run for many years now.
We get the ultimate WR to complement Stevie Johnson. GM Buddy Nix has coveted a receiver who can blow the top off or go for jump balls since he took the job.

    Or am I dreaming?

2Q: If you were the bills, who would you target in the draft?

Guys I like for example: CB Dee Milliner, DE Dion Jordan, OLB Jarvis Jones, ILB Manti Te’o, WR Justin Hunter, WR DeAndre Hopkins, DT Margus Hunt, WR TJ Moe, WR Ryan Swope, CB Jordan Poyer, CB Tyrann Mathieu

Head Coaches Who Call Their Own Plays? In the NFL you have coaches who are either offensive or defensive minded guys, however some do and some don’t call their own plays. Examples,
    Play callers,
    – New Orleans – Sean Payton calls the plays on offense
    – New England – Bill Belichick calls the plays on defence

    Non play callers,
    – New York Giants – Tom Coughlin (Kevin Gilbride calls offensive plays )
New York Jets – Rex Ryan ( Mike Pettine calls defensive plays )

In the case of New England, BB decided not to hire a defensive co-ordinator and call the plays himself.

What do you think are some of the benefits, and also the negatives to head coaches calling their own plays compared to those who may call some, but overall leave it down to their co-ordinators??
Sorry if it seems like a simple minded question – i am British so we are not as well educated on the game as you guys 😀

I think if a coach is smart enough and can call the right plays, one of the biggest advantages is it allows the team more room not to spend money on another coach. Think about this. If you are a head coach and you can call plays like a coordinator, then it actually saves the team money by not hiring another coach. That money can then be used elsewhere to upgrade any roster changes, or any coaching staff changes. Secondly, coaches that call their own plays have the ability to assert their own style in terms of philosophy for defense/offense. When you hire a coordinator the coach usually lets that person infuse their own style. But if a coach does it, then it leaves him with the sole responsibility meaning, he alone can call the shots and he doesn’t have to rely on anyone else. In other words, the coach knows how he wants to call the plays, so he doesn’t have to look to anyone else and can use his own ways how he sees fit.

I think the major drawback of calling one’s own plays is the coach is burdend with extra duty. Basically the coach has to do double the work. Its already hard enough managing the entire team, during the week (practice, meetings, ownership meetings, etc) but when a coach calls his own plays, he has to do that, and manage everything else. That in turn can cause the team to collapse if the coach is not built to handle that pressure. It can be stressful managing multiple things at once. Also, it might not balance out evenly in terms of effectiveness. The coach might need a balance where he can manage, while someone else calls the shots. Basically it may mean the coach doesn’t balance his time or ability in the right spots causing defficiencies rather than effeciency.
