Can Song Parodies Get You In Trouble? I have a YouTube account and I make parodies of popular songs. I recently deleted my videos because I was told I could get in trouble by the artist for “making fun of them”. For example, for the Miley Cyrus song “We Can’t Stop” I made “We Can’t Get Jobs.” and explained that Miley likes to party and won’t get a job. I also made:
Taylor Swift – I Knew You Were Trouble to “I Cause Lots of Trouble” showing Taylor getting together and breaking up with five guys.
Justin Bieber – Baby to “Boobies” showing Justin Bieber with boobs and saying he is female. lol

Anyway, please give me some things to watch out for so I don’t get sued. Thanks
I also use pictures in my video instead of film like actual pictures of the artist including random pictures that go with the lyrics.

‘Weird Al’ Yancovic has made a career out of parodying songs. He might have to pay a royalty to the composer. But he doesn’t make fun of the singer. People in the public eye have less protection against being made fun of – the SNL ‘skit’ when the ‘blind’ black political candidate kept walking in front of the camera was funny, and insulting. There was a lot of uproar, but I don’t think there were any suits.

You would need the advice of an entertainment lawyer as to any limits.
