Sympathy For The Devil? I’m looking for books where the devil plays a sympathetic character, such as The Master and Margarita and I, Lucifer. It’s okay if the devil isn’t the main character, and if the character is representational of Satan rather than actually being Satan. I’d rather not read a series, like His Dark Materials or the Prince Roger books. I’ve already read:

    The Master and Margarita
    I, Lucifer
    To Reign in Hell
    Paradise Lost
    Fifth Business
    The Screwtape Letters

The Mysterious Stranger by Mark Twain

A very odd book and not typical of what you would expect from Twain. His later writings (I believe this is his last book) seem very bitter and almost hostile toward the human race. Kurt Vonnegut’s later work always impresses me the same way and I think that’s one of the reasons I feel Vonnegut and Twain are so similar. It’s been a while since I’ve read it but I remember liking it.

The Sorrows of Satan (1896) – Marie Corelli
Good Omens (1990) – Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett
Marriage of Heaven and Hell (1790) – William Blake.

Okay, that’s all I got. I was trying to remember then name of a Russian book, not The Master and Margarita, but I give up. Writers/poets of Romantic era (1800-1850) sometimes portrayed Satan sympathetically as a creature struggling against the unfair oppression of an autocratic God.

Frankenstein – Mary Shelley….There are many, many interpretations of this book and one of them is that The Creature is a sympathetic Devil. Shelley alludes to John Milton’s “Paradise Lost” often. (She also alludes to other source material like Greek mythology. She was well read.) Usually the dynamic between Dr. Frankenstein and The Creature is as God and Adam or father and son but there is a bit of the cast out Satan in The Creature too. It’s been my favorite book since I was 14/15 years old.

I suspect you were joking on the R/S version of this question but if you can handle The Master and Margarita then you can take on Faust

How Can I Be More Socially Confident? I’m a girl, and I turned 13 four days ago.

I can’t do anything in public. I can’t eat, yawn, talk, laugh, or tie my shoes or anything that would make me more than part of the background. I can’t even walk up to a counter and order McDonald’s because I’m afraid I’ll do it wrong. I’m constantly aware of everything I do, even the way I sit, hoping I was doing it normally. I don’t talk to more than my tight circle of people at school because I’m scared I don’t know enough about them to talk to them without embarrassing myself.

I’m pretty sure the most socially daring thing I’ve ever done is last month. This kid named Prince (really popular) was being a jerk to my friend William (who has, I think, 2 friends and a loser reputation) about wearing the same clothes as yesterday, so after a minute of him being a twatwaffle I spoke up and said, “Prince, stop being mean!” and he did. But my hands were shaking and my heart was racing because I never thought I’d do that.

The problem is, I don’t have a low self esteem, I just worry the other kids won’t appreciate my good qualities. I do, in fact, have a high self esteem, but I think they’ll fixate on my bad qualities of which I have many. I don’t know how to be confident like those kids who are always screaming to eachother at the top of their lungs and laughing loudly and taking off their shoes in class. But I wanna be like that.

You are introverted. The smartest people on the planet are introverted and they tend to burst out when they feelstrongly about it. Rosa park was introverted. You can boost your confidence by knowing this one fact, everyone is awkward. Everyone worried about the same things you do but will never talk about it, either because they are not as self aware as you are or its too personal. If you don’t want to be seen as shy and quiet anyore then ask questions. Ask about peoples background and follow it up with connections to your own life. For example : you- I see you have a north Carolina sticker on your car are you from there? Person- yeah I just moved here from there. you-m grandparents live there, we go there every summer they love the hiking seen. Etc etc. try to connect to them with similarities. Also don’t be afraid to make mistakes, like ordering food. Laugh about your mistake.

Need Good Names For Characters(boy And Girl)? Good names for characters?
So I’m writing this story. There is my main character and her friend (a boy) and I need good names. The girl is very stubborn and wicked smart. She is a knight though she is a girl because she won a competition and the king made her his ward blah blah blah. She has black hair and intimidating blue eyes. She is quiet and observes more than she talks. For her I don’t want a very modern name and not something that’s too old. I would rather something short or a name that could be shortened.
For the boy he is a joker, but serious when he has to. He has light brown hair and grey-green eyes. He is the prince. I don’t want any overused names. Doesn’t have to be a normal ‘royal’ name. I’m trying to make him like that fictional character you can’t help have a crush on but he is so oblivious, but he likes teasing girls but he never really thinks they would like him if he weren’t the prince. He is kind and sometimes blurts things out.
PLEASE HELP! I have been using placeholder names and I find it very difficult! I’m putting this is the pregnancy and parenting category for baby names because I figured that would be the best place to get good names!
Also, if you have any last name ideas, I welcome those too:)
