Isn’t This Very Like Pascal’s Wager? Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, was interviewed for TV. (SpaceX just launched the first commercial rocket to replenish the Space Station). The interviewer said that almost no one believed he (Musk) could pull this off and that it was a huge risk. So why did he take such an enormous risk? Musk replied that the potential benefit made it worth the risk.

The claim Musk made (that he could build this rocket) was extraordinary and he had no extraordinary evidence to support that claim.
If we can logically accept more risk for the possibility of more gain, then what risk for infinite gain?
“You’ve seen people more intelligent than you mention Pascal’s Wager and thought you’d make yourself look cool by mentioning it yourself even though you clearly don’t have the first clue what it is.”

Thanks for the psych eval. I have read Pensees and a number of explanations. It (in rough drafft form) was published posthumously so we don’t really know what Pascal had in mind.

Would You Like To Have Your Ashes Sent To Outer Space When You Die? James Doohan’s family had his ashes sent. He was “Scottie” on the original Star trek series & I think he actually requested that it be done (make it so engineer). It went up on the SpaceX rocket the other day. As I don’t want to be cremated when I leave this mortal coil I don’t think they will send me up as a whole corpse without a casket for “space burial”. I could become an expired human asteroid.

Why Is The News Media Making A Big Deal About Spacex(a Private Company) Launching A Rocket. What About Boing? Also a private company that has been building rockets for decades. Or Lockheed (a private company) building rockets? What makes SpaceX (yet another private company) so special, I don’t get it.

Why Was The SpaceX Falcon 9 Launch Aborted At The Last Half-second? I was somewhat disappointed that they had to abort at the last second but at least they’ll be able to fix any miscalculations that could have caused an accident. Anyway, what was the cause of the launch being aborted and when will they attempt another launch?

When The Spacex Dragon Launch Goes To The International Space Station On Tuesday 5/22/2012 Will It Have? Astronauts on board or will it be an unmanned flight

    • Curator says:

The first few launches are all unmanned cargo runs – the Dragon capsule and Falcon launch vehicle are not yet rated for manned flight

Why Is The SpaceX Launch Window For The ISS Trip So Narrow? The Falcon 9 launch window for the ISS mission is about 1 second. What’s the deal?
