Isn’t This Very Like Pascal’s Wager? Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, was interviewed for TV. (SpaceX just launched the first commercial rocket to replenish the Space Station). The interviewer said that almost no one believed he (Musk) could pull this off and that it was a huge risk. So why did he take such an enormous risk? Musk replied that the potential benefit made it worth the risk.
The claim Musk made (that he could build this rocket) was extraordinary and he had no extraordinary evidence to support that claim.
If we can logically accept more risk for the possibility of more gain, then what risk for infinite gain?
“You’ve seen people more intelligent than you mention Pascal’s Wager and thought you’d make yourself look cool by mentioning it yourself even though you clearly don’t have the first clue what it is.”
Thanks for the psych eval. I have read Pensees and a number of explanations. It (in rough drafft form) was published posthumously so we don’t really know what Pascal had in mind.
Why Is The News Media Making A Big Deal About Spacex(a Private Company) Launching A Rocket. What About Boing? Also a private company that has been building rockets for decades. Or Lockheed (a private company) building rockets? What makes SpaceX (yet another private company) so special, I don’t get it.
Nothing special. Their rocket will go up ‘Whoosh’ and come down ‘Boing Boing’.
Is This “flack Speak” Or Is This Honorable Truth By SpaceX Prez On The Aborted Launch? Maybe I’m a cynic but I genuinely can’t tell anymore. She looks to be on the level, but…
She looked sharply at the questioner who mentioned “failure,” and said —
“Yeah… this is not a failure. We aborted with purpose. It would be a failure if we were to have lifted off with an engine trending in that direction.” – Space X president Gwynne Shotwell on her company’s shutting down a launch at the last half second due to unusually high engine pressure.
She looks to have some gravitas. She more than held her own in the press conference with the NASA people. Is she just Elon Musk’s attack dog, or does she swing some weight herself?
If they successfully get to the space station a few times, would Musk try to take the outfit public?
Is Jessica Jensen A Man? SpaceX is crazy. But really, nice Adam’s apple…
Loool….no 😛
