Need Some College Suggestions? I’m a Junior and am having a hard time figuring out what college to go too. My father died and my mom works full time but still not much is coming and and barely any saved up. I live in new york so I was thinking possible a SUNY but anywhere that is cheap I wouldn’t mind going. I really want to peruse a Major in Computer Engineering and have taken computer science , and engineering classes to get the upper-hand. My SAT score are 610 math, 500 reading and 470 in writing but i am taking them again to on Saturday trying to get to a 1800. I liked a list of colleges I have already been looking into below but some more options would be much appreciated.

Purdue Univ (Would be my first choice if I could afford it.)
Rutgers New Brunswick (Would Really like to go here but once again cost)
U of MA Amherst (A little cheaper but still pretty expensive)
SUNY Stony Brook (Would go here but don’t know If I’ll get in)
SUNY New Paltz (Medium school would not mind going.)
City Coll of NY (Kind-of safety school.)
    SUNY Buffalo (Another safety school)

Can I Get Into Stony Brook? I’m a sophomore in high school and my gpa is 87. I wanna go to school for engineering and Stony Brook has a pretty good program. I take 2 honors classes this year one being engineering and next year I’m taking 4 two engineering one math and a science. Also, one reason my gpa is lower because Spanish is the only class I get bad grades in. Will colleges see this? Do u think I can get accepted?

    • Curator says:

You still have two years of HS, and have not even taken the PSAT. Stop worrying for a year! And maybe switch to a language that is more useful for engineering (German, Russian, French, Arabic, or Chinese in descending order). In general, with all those honors classes you sound in good shape

What Are Good Engineering Schools In The East/Midwest? I got 1370/1600 on the SAT (2060/2400)
    Around 3.5 GPA (90%)

4 years of wrestling + year round clubs
    2 years of volleyball

    Taking 4 APs senior year:
    AP Chem
    AP Gov
    AP Macro
    AP Calculus AB

What engineering schools would be good for me/ reaches I should look into?

    I’m thinking of

    Renneslaer (High Match/Low Reach)
    Suny UB (Safety)
    Suny Stony Brook (safety)
    Suny Geneseo (Match)
Penn State University (Should get in)
    Purdue (Should get in)

What are some good schools I should look into for the NE/MW area?

    Thanks everyone in advance.

I Want To Become A Traveling Physical Therapist With A Phd. How Much Do Traveling PT’s Make? I plan on getting my phd in physical therapy from Stony Brook or transferring to Binghamton after my first year at a community college for my bachelors in Bio then Stony Brook for PT school. I want to travel because I can network and also pay off my debt. Also I feel traveling will help me build my confidence to become a better PT.

    • Curator says:

There some misconceptions about your plans about which you might like some clarification. First, you will not be obtaining your PhD, but a DPT. This is the new entry level PT requirement (or it will be very soon). There are PhD programs, but these are meant as post-doctoral work for those who wish to teach, work in research labs, etc. The PhD is NOT the entry level PT degree that you need for practice.

Second, traveling PTs do make a decent buck…I’d likely say $75,000 and upwards if you work continuously. HOWEVER, it is NOT intended for new grads.

New grads need a stable environment with a mentor in place. In fact, many PT programs are starting to change the education model to reflect this. A traveling PT needs to be able to be dropped into a clinic and ready to hit the ground running. They are expected to fill roles that need a PT who requires very little prompting. It’s not a place to network and/or build your skills. Sometimes you are in a clinic for months, sometimes only for days. It’s a highly volatile position.

I’d really recommend new grads work in a health care system (hospital network) that offers a variety of settings. Staffing is usually stable, there are multiple environments in which you can work and the pace is a little slower…(ie, usually one patient at a time)…this is where you network and build skills and confidence.

Colleges With Good Language Programs? I am at the end of my junior year in high school so I am finalizing my list of colleges that I’m applying to in the fall. I want to major in East Asian Studies and be an interpreter and/or translator for east asian languages. Right now I’m applying to colleges in NY because I live here and would like to stay in the NY/PA/NJ/CT area. St, Johns University SUNY Stony Brook, Hofstra University, Rutgers University, and City College of New York are my choices right now. I know there are better colleges but I have only have an 85 weighted GPA that will probably be an 88/89 by the end of the year. Basically what I’m asking is if these are good schools for what I want to study, and if anyone has any other suggestions?
oh and also what is my current GPA on a 4.0 scale?
I have both an account on Naviance and College Board all the colleges I’ve listed have the major I want I just want to know what’s the best one to go to

What College Should A Brit Go And Study To Experience “America” For His Year Abroad? Hi,

    I am going on a Year Abroad (as part of my English BA degree) from England. Anyway, I have the choice of the following;

1 University of Alaska at Fairbanks
2 Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia
    3 Washington University in Seattle
    4 Reed College, Portland, Oregon
    5 Oregon State University, Corvallis
    6 University of Colorado, Boulder
7 University of California at Davis
8 University of California at Berkeley
9 University of California at Santa Cruz
10 University of California at Santa Barbara
11 University of California at Los Angeles
12 University of California at Irvine
13 University of California at San Diego
    14 University of Texas, Austin
15 Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge
    16 Tulane University, New Orleans
17 University of Miami, Coral Gables
    18 Georgia Tech., Atlanta
    19 Spelman College, Atlanta
    20 University of Georgia, Athens
21 University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
22 George Washington University, Washington DC
    23 Georgetown University, Washington DC
24 Pennsylvania State University, University Park
25 State University of New Jersey, Rutgers, New Brunswick
26 State University of New York, Stony Brook
27 Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley
    28 University of Massachusetts, Amherst
    29 University of Vermont, Burlington
    30 Rensselaer Polytechnic Inst., Troy
    31 University of Rochester
    32 University of Toronto
    33 University of Pittsburgh
    34 University of Waterloo, Ontario
35 University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
    36 Purdue University, West Lafayette
    37 University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia
    38 Occidental College, Los Angeles
    39 Washington University, St Louis
    40 Arizona State University, Tempe
41 University of British Columbia, Vancouver
    42 Roosevelt University, Chicago

I want to go somewhere that is close to a big city (not in one), has a traditional US college feel to it (like in movies, yes I know it’s a stupid criteria), is very American culture orientated, friendly people and where I will get a chilled workload (it is a year off after all) and where my British accent will do me justice.

Another question is, will my English accent (southern) work with the ladies? (I have heard so, or is it a myth?)

    • Curator says:

Corvallis is more of a hillbilly place. It’s surrounded by small towns and there’s not much nightlife there. I’d consider Portland State University if I were you. Or Washington University in Seattle might be kind of fun but the place is rainy and filled with hipsters (isn’t it how England is?).
