That makes him number 115 all-time on the list of receivers and number 100 all-time on the list of touchdown receptions.

The key question is does he compare favorably with the tight ends already in the Hall of Fame-Dave Casper, Mike Ditka, John Mackey, Ozzie Newsome, Charlie Sanders, Shannon Sharpe, Jackie Smith, and Kellen Winslow. That’s eight great tight ends. Pretty stiff competition. Not sure Charlie Sanders deserved his induction, but the rest did.

Then there are the other great tight ends not in the Hall of Fame-Russ Francis, Jay Novacek, Steve Jordan, Todd Christensen, Keith Jackson, Mark Bavaro, and probably others I’m forgetting. Coates probably is somewhere in that group. Is he more deserving than the others of becoming the ninth tight end to be inducted? I’m not convinced. I won’t argue he’s not, either.

Top 10 Tight Ends Of All-Time? This list is not based on receiving numbers.

    10) Mark Bavaro (New York Giants, Cleveland Browns, Philadelphia Eagles)
    9) Ben Coates (New England Patriots/Baltimore Ravens)
    8) Todd Christensen (New York Giants/Oakland-L.A. Raiders)
    7) Tony Gonzalez (Kansas City Chiefs, Atlanta Falcons)
    6) Kellen Winslow (San Diego Chargers)
    5) Mike Ditka (Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys)
    4) Ozzie Newsome (Cleveland Browns)
    3) Dave Casper (Oakland-L.A. Raiders, Houston Oilers, Minnesota Vikings)
    2) Shannon Sharpe (Denver Broncos, Baltimore Ravens)
    1) John Mackey (Baltimore Colts, San Diego Chargers)
Jay Novacek looked a lot better when the other team had to cover Michael Irvin, Alvin Harper, and Emmitt Smith.
Sorry, but Tony G. is not the best ever. I’ve never seen him block anybody? If this was a Top 10 Receiving Tight Ends list then, yes, he would be at the top.
Antonio Gates.. not yet. He’s flourished because NO ONE else in San Diego could catch the ball, until now that Vincent Jackson is there. Same thing with Antonio Gates though, has he even blocked anybody?
